18th International Summer Seminar in Yiddish Language and Culture

Do you want to learn Yiddish? Are you interested in the history of Warsaw’s Muranów? Or maybe you just want to meet interesting people and do something cool together? If so, this project is just for you! Although we can’t meet in person, we can still see each other. Turn on #ZoomOnYiddish and take part in our first online seminar!
The Shalom Foundation and the Center for Yiddish Culture invite all Yiddish lovers to a three-week virtual meeting with Yiddish language and with Jewish history, literature, culture and art, which will take place through the ZOOM platform on June 29 – July 17, 2020.
Our year’s long tradition and experience related to the Warsaw seminar has been enriched this year with an online teaching and learning so that despite unfavorable conditions everyone can immerse themselves in the language and cultural world of Yiddish through intensive classes, as well as tutorials, lectures and workshops. From the comfort of your own home, but surrounded by participants from all over the world and under the guidance of the best specialists, we will once again delve into the extraordinary world of history and tradition associated with the language and culture of Ashkenazi Jews.

• Yiddish classes on 4 levels:
– Yiddish1 (I), teachers: dr. Karolina Szymaniak (University of Wrocław, Jewish Historical Institute), Reyze Turner (Maison de la Culture Yiddish, Paris)
Class hours: 3:30pm-5:00pm, 6:00pm-7:30pm Warsaw time (60h)
– Yiddish2 (II), teachers: dr. Magdalena Kozłowska (University of Warsaw), dr. Agata Reibach (University of Warsaw)

• Conversation and language tutorials (3h)
– Conversation: Hasidic Yiddish – advanced level, led by Shloyme Libertovsky (intermediate and advanced students)
– Conversation for less advanced groups, led by: pedagogical team of Seminar (separately for beginners and for students of groups II and III)

• Workshops
– The reading of Yiddish manuscripts workshops led by Anna Szyba (University of Warsaw)

– Jidisz far historiker (workshop of a historian working in Yiddish) led by dr. Magdalena Kozłowska (University of Warsaw)
– Language workshop: Slavism in Yiddish led by dr. Agata Reibach (University of Warsaw)
– Language workshops: Hebraisms in Yiddish led by Tal Hever-Chybowski
– Creative Yiddish Writing Workshop led by Ethel Niborski

Sunday: 2:00pm-3:00pm; 7:00pm-9:00pm Warsaw time. The screenings will be available at the time chosen by students.
